The Schmurger from chef Dave Culwell is the bestselling item at Burger Schmurger. The restaurant finally will get its own permanent home in East Dallas after years of doing pop-ups and restaurant residencies.Owner Dave Culwell signed a lease Nov. 15, 2024 to open a restaurant and bar on N. Buckner Boulevard, near Tex-Mex restaurant El Vecino and coffee shop Middle Ground.
Dave Culwell quit his job to grow Burger Schmurger, a backyard pop-up he started with his daughter during the COVID-19 pandemic.Culwell’s burger business started during the COVID-19 pandemic as a backyard pop-up at his friends’ homes in the northeast Dallas neighborhood of Lake Highlands. It was his daughter Stella’s idea — a way to connect with friends during uncertain times.
For years, he’s been serving burgers at birthday parties, at elementary-school events and outside SMU football games. Through it all, Culwell had been looking for the right place to set down roots for Burger Schmurger.. That partnership started in 2023 and has proven to be mutually beneficial for the sports bar and to the burger team.The difference between High Fives and this new spot? Burger Schmurger exists inside of the High Fives, and its name isn’t on the building.
“Beyond selling the best burgers in Dallas, I also want to serve the best wings in Dallas,” he challenged. The restaurant may open early for breakfast on weekends to attract those visiting White Rock Lake. Culwell also plans to add a pool table.Burger Schmurger is expected to open at 718 N. Buckner Blvd., Dallas. An opening date isn’t set yet.
