A smattering of people showed up at the Burbank lanes on Tuesday, hoping for a last go at the pins at Pickwick Bowl, but as the Bowl’s website noted: It was closed for business on Tuesday, an…

BURBANK — The rumble of bowling balls and the crack of toppling pins — as well as the cheers and laughter they produce — went silent on Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Pickwick Bowl, as the beloved Burbank institution shuts its doors after more than 60 years to make way for town homes.

Sandy Munz holds a sign as she sits on her horse Chili outside the Pickwick Bowl on the Burbank bowling alley’s last day of business Tuesday, Aug15, 2023. The bowling alley is shutting it’s doors after more than 60 years to make way for town homes. “Over the years, Pickwick customers have become friends and are like family,” Darin Mathewson, general manager of Pickwick Bowl and Banquets, wrote in an Instagram post on Aug. 2, announcing the closure to customers.

Mathewson has worked for the bowling alley for 30 years, and said his family celebrated many milestones and other special occasions there. “Thank you for all the good times you’ve provided me and my family over the last 50 years,” Laurie Herndon wrote on Pickwick Bowl’s Facebook page.
