DNA from a bull shark was found in the investigation of Berry's death, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development confirmed today.
The discovery prompted the state government to include adult bull sharks in the existing shark tagging program, which currently monitors 163 white sharks.The expansion will provide a "comprehensive understanding" of the movements of bull sharks found in the river where Berry was mauled. "We know that bull sharks are capable of living in both marine and fresh water and they give birth in estuaries and river mouths during the warmer summer and early autumn months," Fisheries Minister Don Punch said.Bull sharks will now be tagged in Perth following the death of 16-year-old Stella Berry.
"It is important to gain a better understanding of shark movements and numbers in the Swan Canning Estuary, while also providing useful information to inform WA's shark hazard mitigation efforts."Continue reading
