A court in Scotland has found a Bulgarian migrant guilty of assaulting a 12-year-old girl and behaving in a threatening manner towards a group of girls, following an incident where a 13-year-old girl brandished an axe and knife. The incident occurred on August 23, 2025, when Ilia Belov, 22, and his sister Nadjedzha Belova, 20, confronted four girls aged 12 to 14. During the altercation, a 13-year-old girl brandished a hand-axe and knife while another shouted at the siblings to back off. The case gained significant attention after footage of the confrontation circulated online, and further controversy arose when initial police statements blamed the children.
Belov was convicted of assaulting a 12-year-old girl and behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, while Belova earlier pleaded guilty to assaulting a 13-year-old. Both will be sentenced on August 5. The court heard that Belov claimed he was walking to buy cigarettes when the girls started shouting abuse at him, including a racial slur.
He said he called his sister because he was scared, and later pushed one girl to the ground, believing she was about to attack his sister. However, Sheriff Timothy Niven-Smith rejected Belov defense as wholly unconvincing and self-serving. Evidence showed that Belov initiated the confrontation by making inappropriate comments to the girls, shouting hello sexy, I will show you a good time.
Belov denied this under oath, but the judge stated he was entirely satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that Belov comments were the trigger for the incident. The girls called Belov a creep after his remarks, leading to the physical assault. The court also heard that Belova assaulted the 13-year-old by pulling her hair, dragging her to the ground, and hitting her, and that another 12-year-old was thrown to the ground. One girl required hospitalization.
The case stirred public outcry after police initially charged the 12-year-old girl with possessing offensive weapons and admonished the public for spreading misinformation. The police later acknowledged that their statements did not fully reflect the situation but stopped short of apologizing. Politicians, including former First Minister Humza Yousaf, criticized those discussing the case online, accusing them of racism.
However, the court result contradicted the initial narrative. The mother of one of the girls welcomed the prosecution, saying the girls were telling the truth and were slandered. She expressed relief that the truth had come out. The incident highlights tensions around immigration and public safety in Scotland. Both siblings face sentencing on August 5
