Built to last: UTSA coach Jeff Traylor focused on sustaining success as 2022 season opens
UTSA Head Coach Jeff Traylor watches his players during practice Thursday morning at the Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence. After Jeff Traylor won his first state championship at Gilmer in 2004, he watched as the expectations around the program ballooned overnight.
During the months of preparation for UTSA’s kickoff against No. 24 Houston at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Alamodome, Traylor often posed a question to the Roadrunners: “Are we built to last, or are we a flash in the pan?”“We’re still building infrastructure. We’re still trying to get to a Power Five level in my mind,” Traylor said. “Our infrastructure has to be built in a way we could sustain this success for the next 25 or 30 years.
“It’s like college football around here now,” Traylor said. “Are we all the way there? No, we are not. We have some things we still have to get crossed off, but we’re moving in the right direction, and we just have to keep having success.” The odds of matching last year’s 11-0 start are steep the next two seasons — a reality that caught Traylor’s attention last fall when he was mulling a new contract with UTSA during a storm of rumors about Texas Tech’s interest in hiring him as its next head coach.
So which team was better? Traylor said he would argue the 2020 group deserves consideration, graded on a rubric where the only focus is embodying the Roadrunners’ “210 Triangle of Toughness” culture. Wideout Zakhari Franklin said the phrase means “playing one play longer than your opponent,” continuing the Roadrunners trend of prevailing in close games.

Create a Growth Culture, Not a Performance-Obsessed OneMany C-Suite leaders are focused on how to build higher performance cultures. Instead, it may be more effective to focus on creating a culture of growth. Building a growth culture requires a blend of individual and organizational components: an environment that feels safe, a focus on continuous learning, time-limited experiments, and continuous feedback.
