Any regular subway rider has heard the ads – the MTA is hiring. As its Chief Administrative Officer, I’m in charge of overseeing those efforts to place smart, qualified people in the right jobs to keep millions of New Yorkers moving from Montauk to Poughkeepsie and everywhere in between.

It takes a village. The MTA workforce is 74,000-strong – roughly the same as the population of Schenectady – making us one of the largest employers in all of New York State. Riders interact most often with bus and train operators, but our team has a full range of employment opportunities available: engineering and design, yes, but also finance, law, IT, environmental science and many other areas.

The depth and diversity of talent have allowed us to start doing more work in-house. Using agency staff instead of third-party contractors helps us to enhance accountability, efficiency and cost-containment, and you can see examples of that success all over the system. Those platform barriers now keeping riders safe in 100 subway stations? They were built by the Maintenance of Way division at New York City Transit.

The thousands of security cameras that have been installed in stations and train cars? Done by MTA technicians. Even development of the new MTA app was an in-house IT operation, a project that most definitely would have been outsourced in the past. Real New Yorkers are the force behind these upgrades, and we’re always looking for more talent to join our team.

There are two ways to get an MTA job – by taking one of the civil service exams, scoring well and getting a placement, or by applying for a management or administrative position on our website. We’re also focused on building relationships with schools and universities to create a bridge between the classroom and the workforce. MTA’s partnership with the CUNY system places hundreds of students at undergraduate and graduate levels into paid internships every year.

We also have a longstanding connection with Transit Tech High School. No matter where you are in your career, there is a place for you at the MTA. So, the next time you hear that familiar announcement, know that it’s more than just a recruitment pitch — it’s an invitation to help shape the future of transportation in New York.
