“For about a year and a half, I barely left my apartment,” sighed Sydorenko. “It was very hard for me to socialize with people.” She was only 20, unequipped with coping strategies, and with no one to advise her on dealing with her emotional struggles. Then Sydorenko met a male gamer, John Uke, who had given up on playing for similar reasons. Disillusioned but not defeated, they delved into the psychology of online interactions, convinced there had to be a better way. Their research revealed that the root of the problem wasn't the games themselves but the social dynamics at play. It became clear that building a positive online experience required a focus on social engineering., some even facing physical threats.
“When the Russian invasion started again, I felt a big responsibility to return to the army, but GameTree needed me, too, and it was not an easy choice to make,” said Sydorenko during an interview with Hackernoon. “It is a situation where all decisions lead to pain and loss. I still ask and blame myself for not fighting with my people.”
