Designing and building a reliable fuel system for street and strip use in a turbocharged Fox Body Mustang.

The street car market has come a long way since it went big-time in 1992, when HOT ROD launched its. In those 30-plus years there have been thousands of street events created to prove what is or isn’t a street car. The most grueling and perhaps most prestigious is, going into its 20th year in 2024. Despite the many decades of popularity, there is still mystery surrounding fuel systems for powerful street cars, like the ones we see running in the 7- and 8-second zone.

Jovanis’ continual commitment to endurance street car events like Drag Week and True Street have led him to solve problems such as designing a suitable fuel system for on and off the track. He credits the Haltech Nexus R5 engine management system for allowing him to run two fuel pumps independently without complication.

A Weldon fuel pressure regulator is mounted under the hood, and you can see the new Fragola lines and fittings installed. The team went with black to give the underhood appearance a clean look. Some drag-and-drive racers have opted for two separate fuel systems. This includes two tanks, two sets of fuel lines, and two sets of injectors. It is far more complicated than the single fuel system/dual-pump setup that Jovanis employs.

A -12AN line runs from the sump to inlet fuel filter before the fuel is fed into the Weldon pump and secondary filter. The feed line is stepped down to -10AN after the second fuel filter and runs the length of the vehicle into the engine compartment. The in-tank Aeromotive fuel pump feeds into the supply line after the Weldon pump. “We use a Fuelab one-way check valve to prevent the in-tank pump from back feeding the Weldon pump,” explained Jovanis on how the two pumps work together.
