Queensland’s opposition has urged the Palaszczuk government to create a dedicated “betterment fund” to replace infrastructure damaged in natural disasters with improved, more resilient structures.
Borrowing a phrase fromDeputy Premier Steven Miles said on Saturday the government’s focus was to “build back better” after the devastating floods.
While he welcomed that approach, Opposition Leader David Crisafulli said there needed to be a more concrete commitment to the build back better ideal.“Let’s get back to a situation where we don’t just replace assets to the same standard in the same location, you can expect a different result. “They might not be traffic engineers or road engineers, but they’ve got common sense, because I’ve heard a lot of them say to me, when things get repaired, like the road system, for example, why don’t they just do it properly, get it right, once and for all?” he said.Loading, with grants of up to $75,000 made available to primary producers, $50,000 for small businesses and not-for-profits, and $20,000 for sporting and community clubs.
