Two years have passed since tragedy struck a Buffalo supermarket, and now, a healing community is finding new ways to spread peace and love.
The 5/14 Honor Space is now open to the public outside of the Tops Friendly Market on Jefferson Avenue, where 10 Black people were killed and three others were hurt in a racially motivated mass shooting May 14, 2022.
Tuesday, Community members — along with Tops employees — affected by the tragic events of the mass shooting in Buffalo's east side neighborhood united with the families of the deceased to commemorate the lives lost."The lives of 10 community members were taken on that day. Three others were wounded, all while grocery shopping or working," said Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown.
"Let this space be a reminder that we Buffalonians are winners," said Reverend Rachelle Robinson. "Take the energy God of our anger and use it for the greatest of good. Take the hurt out of our hearts." "There were churches here unloading food for communities," he said. "There were people visiting homes and making sure seniors were getting what they needed. There were people at work at every single turn. You taught the nation that hate is real, but love is stronger."
