The proposed White House budget would slash 24 percent of spending by the State Department and USAID.

By Carol Morello Carol Morello National reporter focusing on foreign policy and State Department Email Bio Follow March 11 at 7:40 PM The Trump administration is proposing slashing the budget for the State Department and the United States Agency for International Development by almost 24 percent, with particularly steep cuts to humanitarian aid, refugee assistance and global health programs.

This year, more than a dozen retired military officers who commanded in combat zones urged Congress to do the same, calling the cuts a threat to national security. “The U.S. will continue its role as the world leader in humanitarian assistance, but we’ll also call on others to do their part, and we’ll work relentlessly to assure that assistance is delivered as effectively and as efficiently as possible,” said Mark Green, the administrator of USAID.The biggest target in the budget is the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, which would lose almost 90 percent of its budget. It is expected to spend $3.
