KUALA LUMPUR: Support from MPs from both sides is needed if vape liquids are to be made taxable under Budget 2023, says Deputy Finance Minister Steven Sim.
"On the question of whether or not they will be taxed, I believe is being looked at by the Health Ministry," said Sim."Maybe there will be an announcement in Budget 2023 .
The previous government announced plans under Budget 2022 to expand tax collection to vape liquids containing nicotine by imposing excise taxes at RM1.20 per millilitre, but the enforcement was postponed. Earlier this week, the Health Ministry said it aimed to re-table the Control of Tobacco Products and Smoking Bill 2022 so that its enforcement can begin next year. However, it was referred to the Special Select Committee for further scrutiny but this was delayed after the dissolution of Parliament on Oct 10.
Meanwhile, Sim said more than RM5bil in import and sale tax revenue is lost annually due to smuggling of cigarettes and liquor.
