BudgetSpeech2020: Mboweni goes after controversial preachers
Durban - Religious groups have agreed that those religious leaders who avoid paying tax should be dealt with by the government.
Pastor Dennis Hustedt, the former pastor of Durban North, Durban Central and Hillcrest Baptist Churches, said: “Finances need to be open and public with a clear understanding of what the money is doing, where it is going and even salaries, particularly for members of the church.” “That cult along with many other cult-like groups out there tell people that if they give to their leadership and to the cause, then they promise that the Lord would bless them.Michael Swain, the executive director of Freedom of Religion South Africa, said all religious organisations and practitioners, irrespective of faith, were subject to the laws of South Africa, including the laws pertaining to the tax regime.
