Teevens, the most successful coach in Big Green history and a pioneer in player safety, died at 66.
At the Manning academy, Teevens crossed paths with Callie Brownson, one of 16 members of an inaugural clinic involving female football coaches. When he subsequently hired her in 2018 as Dartmouth’s offensive quality control coach, she became the first full-time female football coach at the Division I level. Brownson, a George Mason University alumna who played professionally for the D.C.
career with the Buffalo Bills and the Cleveland Browns, for whom she currently serves as an assistant wide receivers coach.“He was a remarkable man and coach. What he did for the game of football is immeasurable,” Brownson told The Washington Post via direct message when reached Tuesday evening. “From the work he did in finding ways to make the game safer, to his commitment to inclusivity and equality for women in coaching — he was a pioneer and a visionary.
“Unfortunately, the injuries he sustained proved too challenging for even him to overcome,” the family said. “ … We are confident and take comfort in the fact that he passed away knowing how much he was loved and admired.”that she and her husband were bicycling home from dinner at a restaurant in the St. Augustine, Fla., area when he was hit by a pickup truck while trying to cross a major coastal road.
In the wake of Teevens’s amputation and other injuries, he was replaced on an interim basis at Dartmouth by defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator Sammy McCorkle. Earlier this month, the eight Ivy League schools decided their football players would“Coach Teevens’ legacy and his positive impact on others will be felt for generations to come,” the Ivy League said Tuesday.
