Buckeye Lake is seeing fewer algae blooms. Here's why.

Buckeye Lake in recent years may have been better known for algae blooms than boating, but the lake — located half an hour east of Columbus — may have turned a corner.

“This is the best water quality we’ve had in a long time,” said Matt Baumann, director of Buckeye Lake for Tomorrow, a nonprofit focused on improving the lake. “The oxygen that comes out the bottom of the aerator promotes the decomposition of organic materials in the bottom of the lake,” explained Mike Fornataro, executive director of the Buckeye Lake Region Corporation, focused on improving the quality of life around the lake.

"The efforts that have gone into cleaning the water and controlling contaminants have had a positive effect," he said.“Algal blooms are caused by high concentrations of nutrients — specifically nitrogen and phosphorus — in the water,” said Thomas Bridgeman, director of the Lake Erie Center at the University of Toledo."No one is going to drink a glass of water and drop dead," stressed George Bullerjahn, director of theat Bowling Green State University.
