BUBBLE WATCH | Just three weeks remain in the high school football regular season. Here's a closer look at Northeast Florida's teams on the bubble, and what they need to punch playoff tickets.
Which Northeast Florida teams are going to make the cut for the Florida High School Athletic Association's new Metro/Suburban playoffs for high school football — and which ones are about to miss out?
Three weeks remain in the scramble for the playoffs. For teams that don't own district championships and the automatic postseason ticket that comes with them, these are anxious moments. Although the FHSAA's ranking system — a variant of the national MaxPreps ranking — has replaced the RPI this year and the new Metro-Suburban system has changed the shape of postseason, the familiar scramble for position remains.
In Class 2M, 3M, 4M, 2S, 3S and 4S, the FHSAA will allocate at-large playoff berths — four per class per region — based on that ranking formula. In Class 1S and 1M, only two at-large berths are available per region, while in Class 1R, all postseason berths in each region will be determined by the ranking formula.
The Times-Union takes a closer look at some of Northeast Florida's teams on the bubble, with RPIs ranging from sixth to 11th in their respective regions.
