Young isn’t the kind of runner Murray is or Wilson was in their primes. But he can avoid pressure and buy time as well as either. The three of them — really, all efficient short quarterbacks — have a sixth sense about playing the game.According to a team executive, Young has rare processing ability, ranking in the 98th percentile of people who have taken the S2 cognitive test.
“That’s where pocket presence comes into play. Some guys when they get their vision obstructed think they have to run. Those are the ones who struggle.”Brees had more than the ability to process, though. Payton points out Brees once beat Andy Roddick in tennis — Roddick later became the No. 1 player in the world — and could dunk a basketball without a running start.
Payton said he never had to make adjustments for Brees because of his lack of stature, as Brees was at his best five yards behind the center. Small quarterbacks today have other advantages, including more shotgun, spread formations, quarterback movement plays and the acceptance of throws from different platforms. None of this is necessarily new, but it’s more widely practiced.
