It was only two weeks ago that Hoffman was summoned from triple-A Lehigh Valley to pitch to Harper as part of a makeshift spring training at Citizens Bank Park.“I really felt like I needed to take advantage of it because I wasn’t in camp with the team,” Hoffman said. “It was nice to be able to come up and be in front of the staff.
“I just felt like I could show what I’m about, and what I can bring to the table. Luckily, it went well. It was a good first impression, and obviously those are important.” Manager Rob Thomson conceded that part of the reason they brought Hoffman in to face Harper was so they could get eyes on him. They were impressed. Hoffman — who has struggled with command in his career — threw strikes. He had a good slider. He showed some power, touching 97-98 mph.“He said everything looked great,” Hoffman said. “Obviously, he was trying to get as much out of it as he could as well. But we were both in agreement that hopefully I was up here soon and helping the team win.
