Bryan Cranston chats with VF about reprising his role as Walter White in ‘Better Call Saul,’ working with Wes Anderson on AsteroidCity, and his “surprising” new project.
which hits theaters Friday. And he’s reprised his Golden Globe–nominatedcharacter, Judge Michael Desiato, in a second season, despite the Showtime drama’s initial order as a limited series.. “But a lot of it is experiential. I just want to have a good experience.”
It’s not hard to understand the impulse—Cranston has put together a pretty remarkable cast of characters in his career, and particularly over the past decade since AMC’slaunched him into a new phase of stardom, one that led to his first Oscar nomination and two Tony Award–winning runs on Broadway . It helps, too, that he’s been a key part of the success of these projects. Withafter the initial run was a significant ratings hit.
Especially when you’re with a Wes Anderson movie. I’m always fascinated by the photo calls you guys do with this immense glamour behind you and all these unbelievable actors lined up. What was the experience like? And every single one of those actors are saying to themselves, I’m going to be glad when this is over and I can get out of this tuxedo, or this dress and these high heels, and just get into sweats and have a glass of wine. That’s what everybody was saying. There’s a lot of pomp and circumstance to it, but I’m glad it brings attention to the cinema and theatrical storytelling that is coming soon and gets everybody excited about it.is the first time you’ve done a live-action film with Wes.
It is a weird one. Wes makes an animatic of the entire movie and voices all the characters and gives that—what he calls a cartoon—to the actors on a laptop. And we watch it and we realize, Oh, okay, that’s the tone he’s going for. That’s what he meant on that page that was kind of difficult to understand. He’s so specific and so pure in his thinking that you can’t predict how he is going to do any one thing. So you just have to be ready to experience it and adapt and be flexible.
