Under Brunei's strict interpretation of Islamic law, sodomy and adultery are punishable either by death by stoning or by 100 lashes.

Internationally condemned laws punishing gay sex and adultery with stoning to death come into force today in the small Southeast Asian Kingdom of Brunei.

Under Brunei's strict interpretation of Islamic law, sodomy, between two men or an unmarried heterosexual couple, is punishable either by death by stoning or by 100 lashes, the Australian broadcaster ABC reported. A punishment of imprisonment for seven years or a flogging of 10 lashes is reserved for individuals convicted of sodomy or adultery by other evidence.

“Brunei must immediately halt its plans to implement these vicious punishments and revise its penal code in compliance with its human rights obligations. The international community must urgently condemn Brunei’s move to put these cruel penalties into practice,” said Rachel Chhoa-Howard, Amnesty International’s Brunei Researcher.
