Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson: A Five-Film Cinematic Partnership Reviewed
Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Film Collaboration

An in-depth review ranking all five feature films starring both Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson together, from the acclaimed superhero origin story Unbreakable to the widely panned parody Loaded Weapon 1. The analysis covers their dynamic in the Die Hard franchise, M. Night Shyamalan's trilogy, and their roles in the Kingsman series, ending with a look at Willis's retirement cementing their five-film collaboration.

Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, two of the most prolific actors of their generation, share a unique cinematic bond having appeared together in exactly five feature films.

Their joint filmography spans a variety of genres and quality levels, with one collaboration widely regarded as a modern classic, two others considered strong examples within their respective genres, and the remaining two receiving notably mixed to negative receptions. A key milestone in their shared screen time was M. Night Shyamalan's origin-story superhero film Unbreakable, where Willis played the everyman security guard David Dunn, who discovers his indestructibility after a catastrophic train crash, and Jackson portrayed the brittle-boned comic book theorist Elijah Price, also known as Mr. Glass, who orchestrates disasters to find his supernatural opposite.

Their nuanced, tense, and revelatory dynamic anchored that film, making its 2019 sequel Glass a highly anticipated but ultimately disappointing follow-up. Glass attempted to conclude a trilogy by also integrating James McAvoy's multiple-personality character from Split, but its deliberate pacing, unsatisfying narrative turns, and a final act that many felt wasted its potent premise led to a lukewarm critical response.

Prior to Unbreakable, the pair first shared the screen in the violent, stylized action film Die Hard with a Vengeance, where Jackson's volatile shop owner Zeus Carver becomes an unlikely partner for Willis's iconic New York cop John McClane as they thwart a bomb-wielding terrorist's chaotic gambin across New York City. That film is often ranked among the best entries in the Die Hard series, thanks in large part to the electric chemistry and banter between the two leads.

Their other two collaborations are more niche. The 1993 parody film National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1 is a broad spoof of the Lethal Weapon buddy-cop formula, with Jackson in a leading role and Willis making a brief cameo as John McClane. The film is widely considered a misfire, criticized for its repetitive, lowbrow jokes that fail to land despite a clear affection for its targets.

Their fifth and final joint appearance is the 2014 superhero deconstruction film Kingsman: The Secret Service, where Jackson plays a tech mogul with a lisp causing global chaos, and Willis appears as a statesman-like CIA director in a brief but pivotal supporting role. That film was a critical and commercial hit, praised for its sharp satire and inventive action.

Willis retired from acting in 2022 due to health issues, meaning their on-screen partnership, capped at five films, is now a fixed part of film history. The range from the dark, philosophical depth of Unbreakable to the over-the-top parody of Loaded Weapon 1 shows the versatility of both stars, though their shared legacy will most likely be defined by the former and the solid action-comedy thrills of Die Hard with a Vengeance
