Pearl explains why he made the decision to retire when he did

, to take over control of the program. Steven had been on staff for all 11 of his father’s seasons at Auburn, and was associate head coach for the past two. Bruce Pearl did his first basketball interview since retiring on Monday, speaking to reporters at the Bruce, Barkley and Basketball Golf Classic.

It was the first time he had spoken about his retirement since the decision was made. "I truly made my final decision on that Sunday when we produced all those videos that afternoon and made that announcement," Pearl said. "But I had been giving it thought throughout the summer because of the potential run for senate and the thought of having -- maybe possibly not coach." When discussing what went into the decision, Pearl talked about no longer being sure if he could give 100% of his time to coaching like he used to. “Right now, honestly, I have no idea how I’d have found time to coach,” he said. “It’s got to be your only interest, it’s got to be your only focal point. And the other stuff began to be as important.” Over the past three weeks, Pearl said he has spent his time traveling, doing events for Auburn, doing charity work and participating in advocacy for Israel. Under his new role as an ambassador for Auburn athletics, events and ambassador work for the school will become more common. Pearl also mentioned his confidence in Steven Pearl as a reason for why he was comfortable making the decision to retire when he did. “Once I recognized too, that Steven was in position to be able to do this,” Bruce Pearl said, “I mean, there’s nobody that is –- there’s nobody, it’s not a coach in America that could have taken this staff and brought this entire team back and been in position to be able to continue to program the direction it’s going to go." Despite a 30-day transfer portal opening after Bruce Pearl retired, Auburn is retaining its entire roster going into the 2025-2026 season. That group will take the court together for the first time on Wednesday, as Auburn will take on Oklahoma State in an exhibition game at the Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham. The game will not be televised, but a radio broadcast will be streaming on the Auburn Tigers app. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
