CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns have requested an interview with Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter for their head coaching job, a source told cleveland.com.The son of long-time coach Rick Minter, Jesse Minter began his career as an intern at Notre Dame in 2006 before honing his craft at Cincinnati and Indiana State. His first major breakthrough came at Georgia State , where he served as defensive coordinator and earned a Broyles Award nomination for the nation’s top assistant coach after leading one of the most improved defenses in the country. Minter’s leap to the NFL came in 2017 with the Baltimore Ravens, where he spent four seasons under John Harbaugh. Starting as a defensive assistant, he eventually rose to defensive backs coach in 2020. During his tenure in Baltimore, Minter was credited with helping develop a secondary that featured multiple Pro Bowlers and consistently ranked among the league’s best in pass efficiency and takeaways. He has often described his four years in the Ravens organization as a “master’s level” education in defensive scheme and culture. After a one-year stint as the defensive coordinator at Vanderbilt in 2021, Minter reached a career pinnacle at Michigan, and helped the Wolverines gain the upper hand in their rivalry with Ohio State on the way to the 2024 national title. Joining Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan staff in 2022, he orchestrated a defense that became the gold standard of college football. In 2023, his unit ranked No. 1 in the nation in total defense, allowing just 247 yards per game and anchoring the Wolverines’ run to a 15-0 season and a College Football Playoff National Championship. His “Pillars” philosophy, which emphasizes block destruction and turnovers, earned him recognition as a Broyles Award finalist. In 2024, Minter followed Harbaugh back to the NFL to become the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers. This season, the Chargers boasted a top-five scoring defense and a top-ten unit in total yardage. This consistent success has made him one of the most sought-after names in coaching, with several NFL teams recently requesting interviews with him for head-coaching vacancies.Mary Kay Cabot has more than 30 years experience covering the Cleveland Browns for The Plain Dealer and cleveland.com, and became only the second female in Pro Football Hall of Fame history to win the Bill Nunn...
