The Browns and Watson will also contribute $7 million to women’s groups as part of the settlement, and Watson will be required to undergo counseling.
BEREA, Ohio — Deshaun Watson, who steadfastly maintains his innocence, has been suspended 11 games and fined $5 million by the NFL for sexual assault and other violations of the personal conduct policy after a settlement was reached Thursday between the NFL and NFL Players Association.
The NFL, which fought for a year-long ban from the start, appealed the six-game suspension on Aug. 3, and Peter C. Harvey, the former New Jersey attorney general who helped design and implement the personal conduct policy, was designated by Commissioner Roger Goodell to rule on it. “I’ve always stood on my innocence and always said I never assaulted anyone or disrespected anyone and I’m continuing to stand on that,’’ he said. “At the same time I have to continue to push forward with my life and my career.’’
Dee Haslam, who took the podium after Watson along with Jimmy Haslam and Browns GM Andrew Berry, was asked if she feels Watson is innocent. A major component of the discipline is for Watson to comply fully with his treatment plan — something that Robinson didn’t include in the initial ruling. A failure to fully and faithfully comply with the treatment program set forth by a third party provider could result in a delay of his reinstatement, a league source said.
Goodell said in a statement, “Deshaun has committed to doing the hard work on himself that is necessary for his return to the NFL. This settlement requires compliance with a professional evaluation and treatment plan, a significant fine, and a more substantial suspension. We’re grateful to Judge Robinson and Peter Harvey for their efforts in addressing these matters, which laid the foundation for reaching this conclusion.”and ban Watson for the year.
