After a disastrous season with Deshaun Watson, the Browns GM and coach will have another opportunity to select a franchise quarterback.
Not many general managers or head coaches get to survive what Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski are about to survive. This goes beyond 3-14. The Browns not only went 3-14, but they did it with one of the worst trades and contracts in NFL history hanging over them, a season torpedoed in large part by a quarterback they used three first-round picks — and six picks in total — to acquire, using a fully-guaranteed $230 million contract to seal the deal.
They thought they were acquiring a potential Top 5 quarterback and, while there were concerns about fit, there weren’t many concerns about talent at the time. It was the baggage he brought with him that gave Browns fans pause. Then, nearly as soon as he stepped on the field, it was evident the Browns not only took a massive PR hit, they also didn’t get the player they thought they were getting.Now, after a ruptured Achilles ended his 2024 season, Watson had a setback in his recovery and, that, combined with him performing like one of the worst quarterbacks in the league in his seven games this season, it finally feels like this is truly over, even if it’s going to take another year to make it official. After all that, Berry and Stefanski will get an opportunity to remake the quarterback room and get a second shot — we’re not counting Baker Mayfield, since they inherited him — at picking a franchise quarterback. This is the football equivalent of walking away from a major car crash unscathed, vowing to never take life for granted again.
