The Cleveland Browns face early challenges as new head coach Todd Monken begins his tenure, including the departure of a potential defensive coordinator and staff assembly amidst competition from other NFL teams. The surprising demand for former special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone raises questions about the Browns' talent acquisition. Media personality Emmanuel Acho criticizes the Monken hire, while Monken's work with Lamar Jackson offers a counterpoint.

It’s two days since Jimmy Haslam and Andrew Berry surprised BrownsWorld by hiring Todd Monken as their new head coach, and one has to assume the new head coach is already hard at work. Certainly, there are already challenges to face, with his prospective defensive coordinator ready to leave and a staff to assemble while 10 other NFL teams are attempting the same.

Here’s some stuff that makes sense, and some stuff that borders on the loony as Browns fans adjust to the new reality.Defying what Browns fans saw over the last several years, ex-Special Teams Coordinator Bubba Ventrone was in high demand after the changeover at head coach. Ventrone’s special teams units, among the worst in the NFL, did not dissuade the Los Angeles Rams from hiring him, and the Pittsburgh Steelers from trying to hire him. This means something. It could mean that other NFL teams feel Ventrone was given nothing to work with in Cleveland, and that his unit’s lack of success was not his fault. Which, I guess, is an arguable point. Somehow, these teams have separated Ventrone from the actual results on the playing field, which is either a condemnation of the Browns’ ability to secure talent or another example of the old-boy network atOn the other hand, the Rams’ special teams unit was abysmal last season, so perhaps Ventrone’s version of bad is considered an improvement? I’m baffled.Props to Emmanuel Acho for somehow parlaying an average NFL career into media celebrity. I guess the route to doing so is irrational hot takes, since he’s already going off on the Browns’ hiring of Todd Monken. The one-time FOX Sports analystfor saying, “Nothing about Todd Monken as a head man gets me excited” and giving Shedeur Sanders the worst possible advice: “If I’m Shedeur or anybody in that locker room, why am I listening to Todd Monken?” Acho said. Well, there’s the small matter of Monken helping to transform Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson into one of the best players in the NFL. He somehow made Stetson Bennett the leader of a championship team. Fortunately for the Browns, I suspect that Sanders will have better judgment than Acho and will take advantage of what’s offered, just as he did while working with Kevin Stefanski. Clearly, the Browns are concerned about Sanders’ development, as itto get fans excited over the hire, even though I’ve sensed a warming to it in the last 24 hours among many fans.to try to get the Browns to do… something. Basically, the petition asks the Browns’ ownership to shape up or ship out.. The idea that Jimmy Haslam is somehow answerable to Browns fans is difficult to fathom, but the notion that he could be pushed out of ownership is even more challenging. Haslam owns a money machine regardless of what happens on the field. He’s not a lackadaisical owner - he’s one who cares about winning but simply doesn’t know how to do it, or has had extraordinarily bad luck. Or whatever. Put the blame where you want. But Haslam is not going away, nor can one deny he’s willing to throw his money at the problem, unlike some other owners. The thing about humans is that we learn from past mistakes. Well, actually, we don’t always do that. But we know how to grow stuff in large quantities. When not starting up a petition to make himself “King of Football”, Barry McBride is the Publisher and Founder of the OBR and bloviates this nonsense every morning.
