BEREA, Ohio -- Browns cornerback Denzel Ward and Jadeveon Clowney have been ruled out for the Patriots game Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium.Ward suffered the concussion when making the tackle on a 17-yard run by Chargers running back Austin Ekeler in the fourth quarter. Ward was replaced in the lineup by A.J. Green.
Ward was off the field when Chargers coach Brandon Staley targeted rookie M.J. Emerson on a pass to receiver Mike Williams on fourth and 1 from the Chargers’ 46. Emerson broke up the pass like a seasoned vet and didn’t flinch.Clowney added knee and elbow injuries to his sprained ankle during the Chargers game. Kevin Stefanski said he didn’t feel ready to go this game.
On the Patriots side, coach Bill Belichick indicated Friday that it could come down to a gametime decision on quarterback Mac Jones, who’s been limited all week with the sprained ankle that cost him the past two games. Stefanski said he continues to prepare for both quarterbacks and that he’s been very impressed with rookie Bailey Zappe, who started his first NFL game last week and played well in a 29-0 victory over the Lions.
