CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns fully grasp that their blockbuster trade for Deshaun Watson has upset many in their fanbase given that 24 women have accused him of sexual misconduct.
They stressed that their frank discussions with Watson, 26, during their meeting with him in Houston on Tuesday night convinced them he would be a productive member of society and not be accused of sexual harassment or assault in the future. The Browns were initially the first team ruled out of the Watson derby on Thursday, but Browns GM Andrew Berry continued to work towards a deal with Watson’s agent David Mulugheta. Ultimately, they landed him over the Saints, Falcons and Panthers by giving him a new five-year worth an NFL-record fully-guaranteed $230 million in addition to the three first-round picks, the third in 2023 and the fourth in 2024 in exchange for Watson and a fifth in 2024.
With his base salary reduced to about $1.035 million in 2022, Watson will only have to pay $57,500 for every game he’s suspended, or 1/18th of his base salary.
