Retired Marine colonel, former businessman Paul McNamara will lead nonprofit facing neighborhood conflict
Brother Benno’s, an Oceanside nonprofit that served its first meals to the homeless 40 years ago, has hired its first full-time executive director, Paul “Mac” McNamara, a retired Marine colonel, businessman and former mayor of Escondido.
Transients often loiter or trespass near the center and sometimes litter, vandalize, use drugs or commit other crimes. Business owners say they lose customers and tenants, and their property values suffer. “Public security is not Brother Benno’s responsibility, that’s the city’s responsibility,” McNamara said.
Martinek and his wife, Suzy, stepped down from the board recently to allow others to take on more responsibilities, he said Thursday. They encouraged the organization to find new ways of helping people in need. “Our volunteers are all regular folks who see a problem, roll up their sleeves and get to work,” he said. “There’s a lot of compassion here.”
