A man was indicted for allegedly trying to rape a woman on the Upper West Side over the summer, prosecutors announced Wednesday.
Brooklyn resident Estarling Martinez Cabral, 20, was charged with attempted rape, sexual abuse, strangulation, and unlawful imprisonment.
According to court documents, video recording and on-the-record statements, at approximately 1 a.m. on July 20, Martinez Cabral allegedly followed the victim for multiple blocks before grabbing her at West 69th Street near Broadway. Martinez Cabral then allegedly dragged the victim to a secluded area in the courtyard of an apartment building and proceeded to strangle, sexually abuse, and attempt to rape her.
An eyewitness intervened and Martinez Cabral allegedly fled the scene. He ultimately turned himself in to police custody a week later. “Every New Yorker has the right to walk safely along our City’s streets. As alleged, Estarling Martinez Cabral violently attacked a woman doing just that, forcing her to a secluded area before attempting to rape her,” said District Attorney Bragg.
