A 90-year-old man in Brooklyn is fighting eviction from his home of over 50 years after falling victim to a fraudulent deed theft. The community has rallied to support him, demanding an investigation and a halt to the foreclosure proceedings.

A 90-year-old Brooklyn man is facing eviction from the only home he's known for over half a century, sparking outrage and a community mobilization to protect him. Ray Cortez, a resident of Park Slope for over 50 years, is embroiled in a legal battle stemming from a fraudulent deed theft in 2006. Cortez claims a con artist tricked him out of the title to his brownstone, then secretly took out a large loan on the property and vanished.

The incident has left Cortez vulnerable to foreclosure, with an active claim on the property sale. While he is fighting the eviction, Cortez and his family have found support in their community. Neighbors, family members, and local lawmakers rallied around Cortez, demanding an expedited investigation into the matter. Assemblywoman Jo Ann Simon and Council Member Shahana Hanif expressed their concerns, calling for a thorough examination of the case and a halt to the eviction proceedings.Cortez's son, Ray Cortez Jr., hopes that Attorney General Letitia James and District Attorney Gonzalez will finally investigate the case and bring justice to his father. Cortez Jr. stated that they conducted thorough investigations in 2019 and 2022 to assist Mr. Cortez, but legal constraints, specifically the statute of limitations, prevented them from taking action. However, Cortez's attorneys argue that the DA's office never informed them about previous investigations and that the fraudster's active claim on the foreclosure sale renders the statute of limitations irrelevant. Despite the legal complexities, the Park Slope community stands united in their support for Cortez, emphasizing that he does not deserve to experience this turmoil in his twilight years
