PHNOM PENH, Cambodia: Filipino tanker Jerard Jacinto posted a new national record in the men's 100-meter backstroke event as he clinched a bronze medal on Saturday night, May 6 in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.
Jacinto clocked in 55.99 seconds in the race held at the Morodok Aquatics Center, besting the previous national record of 56.27 seconds he set in the 2019 FINA World Junior Championships in Budapest.In the process, Jacinto became the first medalist from the Philippine swimming team in Phnom Penh.Jacinto finished behind Singaporeans Zheng Wen Quah and Farrel Armandio Tangkas who placed first and second, respectively.Quah timed 55.22 seconds while Tangkas registered 55.
800 seconds.Meanwhile, the Philippine women's quartet of Teia Salvino, Miranda Renner, Xiandi Chua, and Olympian Jasmine Alkhaldi claimed a silver medal in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay.Salvino, Renner, Chua, and Alkhaldi clocked 3:47.96 to finish second about an hour after Jacinto notched his bronze medal.The silver medal of the Philippine women's swimming team and the bronze of Jacinto capped the Philippines five-gold medal haul on the official opening day of the SEA Games.
