Duprey was on his scooter and sped off, zig-zagging down the street and then on the sidewalk toward officers, senior officials said. Surveillance video shows the final moments of that chase when the sergeant in plainclothes grabs a red cooler and throws it at Duprey, knocking the man off his motorized ride. He was pronounced dead at the scene on Aqueduct Avenue.The city's medical examiner ruled Duprey's death a homicide, caused by blunt force trauma to his head.
Sergeant Erik Duran is now under investigation as police and state officials look into how the afternoon encounter led to Duprey's death. New York Attorney General Letitia James identified the 30-year-old man who died and announced the investigation her office would undertake pursuant to state law. The attorney general is required to look into deaths at the hands of police in the state.
