📬 New Broncos Mailbag • About that special teams play... • Wilson-Jeudy misconnection • Melvin Gordon III • And more...
: He’s got to show his general manager and the new ownership enough progress that they believe in the trajectory of the team going into 2023 and that he’s driving that trajectory in a positive manner. Certainly, 2-4 is not a good start to that process, but A) there is a lot of the season left and B) one-and-done coaches are relatively rare, though certainly not unheard of.
Parker, can you give me the reasoning behind why P.J. Locke stood on top of Montrell Washington while he was trying to field that punt? I mean, it seems like it’s special teams football 101 — don’t get in the way of your returner — especially when he’s trying to catch the ball!: Good question, Mike. It’s one of two things, and we haven’t got a full explanation so far.
Is there a disconnect between Russell Wilson and Jerry Jeudy? The two seem like they’re not on the same page. There were a couple of throws where it didn’t look like Jeudy was going in the direction Wilson was throwing to. Also, what happened with the passing game in the second half?: Yeah, Roger, something does seem amiss with Jeudy in particular. Not saying it’s always his fault, but for some reason they just haven’t been able to consistently get him going.
As for the entire passing game, protection had a big role in the evaporation of production. The Chargers harassed Wilson pretty good – and that was with Joey Bosa on injured reserve. Wilson was 3-of-11 for 15 yards in the second half and overtime. That included a couple of throwaways and some low-percentage tries like the third-and-1 shot over the middle for KJ Hamler early in OT. Those, obviously, are numbers that will lose you a lot of close games.
