New Mexico hired Bronco Mendenhall as its new head football coach Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023. The 57-year-old Mendenhall compiled a 135-81 record over 17 seasons at BYU and Virginia and was 7-7 in bowl games before he stepped away from coaching following the 2021 season.
Mendenhall returns to his home state after spending the past year as head coach at the University of New Mexico. He has signed a six-year contract with the Aggies. In 2015, Mendenhall left Provo to become the head coach at the University of Virginia, where he spent six years. During his tenure, he turned around a struggling program, leading them to three consecutive bowl games and an Atlantic Coast Conference championship in 2019.
