Majorca is popular with British tourists - but holidaymakers heading to the Spanish island have been warned about protests in the area
British holidaymakers planning a trip to Majorca during the half term are being warned about potential protests that could cause significant disruption. The popular Balearic Island, along with its neighbours Menorca and Ibiza, is bracing for demonstrations that may coincide with the public holiday, leading to increased traffic and possible disruption at airports.
Activists have expressed their discontent with the impacts of British tourism, and there are indications that the protests could be larger than initially anticipated. A representative from Banc de Temps de Sencelles, the organising group, said: "Initially, we thought there would be about 2,000 people but now it is going to be considerably more."
Tourists are specifically warned that there might be attempts to disrupt operations at Palma de Mallorca Airport as the peak season for British travellers kicks off. However, Alex, host of the YouTube channel Mallorca Under the Sun, offered a different perspective. She said: "As a resident here for over 19 years now, I have to say that we've had these anti-tourism protests since I moved here, so since 2005.
She reassured her viewers by downplaying the impact of the protests, saying: "This is a small minority of people. What can you expect? Should you be cancelling your holiday? Yes, it may be a bit busy at the airport, and yes you may have a slight delay in traffic, but 99 percent of you are going to be having a great holiday," reports Birmingham Live.
She suggested using public transport as a cost-effective and efficient alternative, saying roads had at times been heavily congested.
