Ten years ago, Simon Burgess, of Bristol University, looked into why grades in London schools were higher than in other places. One key reason was a greater proportion of high-performing ethnic minority pupils, and a lower proportion of lower-performing, chiefly, white British pupils; the other was parental involvement. Those are carried through university and into the workplace. Black and Asian parents have no-work youngsters too, but not many.
