Long before Ariana, Dua, and Taylor turned their videos into explorations of fashion, Britney Spears was setting trends on MTV. As an OG pop star, Spears filled the screen with iconic looks, none more memorable than the one that launched her into the spotlight. When the Nigel Dickdebuted in 1998, it boosted Spears’s career and helped to turn Catholic school girl uniforms into a sartorial statement. Twenty-one years later and Spears still loves a pleated plaid skirt.
While she couldn’t resist incorporating current favorites, including a ruffled crop top blouse and a pair of comfy Birkenstock-style sandals into the outfit, the focal point was undoubtedly the teensy black and white skirt. A throwback to her days as pop music’s most talked-out figure, it still looked great now that she’s a laid-back mother of two.
