The use of long-range weapons against Russia could have an 'enormous impact on the operational situation', one expert says
The decision, which is expected to come within days, comes amid reports of a debate between the Pentagon and Biden administration over whether sanctioning attacks deeper into Russia could provoke a response from Moscow. “We’re working that out right now,” US President Joe Biden said this week when asked by reporters whether he would allow Ukraine to use, or ATACMS, to target sites inside Russia.
The missiles are capable of hitting targets 190 miles away and are designed to evade detection despite flying low after being launched, according to manufacturer, MBDA. Meanwhile, US-supplied ATACMS are ballistic missiles fitted with cluster munitions, which scatter thousands of small bomblets over a target.
However, there are also doubts as to how many Storm Shadow missiles Ukraine has left in its arsenal after the swathe of attacks during the counter-offensive last summer. For these reasons, US and UK officials are unlikely to publicly announce whether the use of the weapons deep inside Russian territory has been approved.the use of weapons deep inside Russian territory still “has enormous impact on the operational situation” – regardless of Russia moving its weapons further from the front line.
