Former British soldier Daniel Khalife was sentenced to over 14 years for spying for Iran after escaping from a London prison. He was convicted of violating the Official Secrets Act and Terrorism Act.
Daniel Khalife , a 23-year-old former British soldier, has been sentenced to over 14 years in prison for spying for Iran . Khalife was convicted in November of violating the Official Secrets Act and Terrorism Act after providing restricted and classified material to Iran . His case gained widespread attention when he audaciously escaped from Wandsworth Prison in London by hiding under a food delivery truck.
He was on the run for three days before being apprehended by police riding a bicycle near a canal. During his trial, Khalife pleaded guilty to the escape but maintained his innocence regarding the spying charges. His lawyer argued that his actions were more akin to a comedic plot than a serious espionage operation, claiming he had only passed along imprecise information, including 'laughably fake' documents that caused no real damage. Prosecutors, however, countered that Khalife had deliberately engaged in a 'cynical game' by initially feigning a desire to work for Britain as a double agent after already delivering a substantial amount of sensitive information to the Iranian intelligence service, including the identities of special forces officers. Khalife's escape highlighted the vulnerabilities of Britain's aging and overcrowded prison system, prompting an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his breakout and the possibility of outside assistance. Two men have been arrested in connection with aiding Khalife after his escape. The judge presiding over the case acknowledged the seriousness of Khalife's actions, stating that despite his initial promise as a soldier, he had revealed himself to be a 'dangerous fool' through his repeated breaches of trust and security protocols
