A 65-year-old British pub landlady, Elaine McGowan, was fatally shot in front of her husband during a holiday in Trinidad and Tobago. The incident occurred on July 5 in the Trincity area.
Video footage captured a silver Nissan Tiida stopping near a property, a person exiting, and firing three shots in quick succession before the car sped away. McGowan was standing in the yard of a property, believed to be her godfather's house, with her husband Ian at the time. She was rushed to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Centre but was pronounced dead on arrival.
McGowan, who ran The Castle Hotel in Hythe, Kent, was on the island to handle business at her father's farm, Cocal Retreat, in Manzanilla. She was the daughter of Caribbean immigrants who settled in South London in the 1960s. Trinidad and Tobago Police confirmed they received footage of the shooting as part of their investigation. No arrests have been made and no motive has been established.
Her sister, Joanne Butcher, has appealed for information and described the family's strong Caribbean-rooted values. Tributes from former colleagues highlighted McGowan as a brilliant and well-known figure in her community.
