British Christians are as divided by Brexit as everybody else

A historically broad church is stretched to the limit

ONE OF THE historical functions of England’s established church is to speak for the whole nation, including those of other faiths and none, at times of collective rejoicing, remembrance, mourning or fear. To some extent, the Church of England continues to play this role, for example at royal weddings or in acts of remembrance for fallen soldiers.

Today we see signs of division, perhaps more clearly than for generations in peace time. There is exclusion from a sense of common purpose and of equal rights in our society, politically, economically and socially...Brexit has revealed how our politics and society have, for many decades, not paid sufficient attention to the common good: that shared life of a society in which everyone is able to flourish. That pain and exclusion continues in this country.

And in a very different corner of British Christianity, the smallish world of zealous fundamentalism, the sentiment in favour of Brexit is often no less passionate, but very different in tone. During a recent pro-Leave march, a white-haired lady carried a placard which was widely and approvingly shared by evangelicals on social media:
