Britain's opposition Labour Party hailed a 'seismic' victory in an election for a UK parliamentary seat in Scotland, beating the Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP) in a sign of its recovery in the country before a national election expected next year.

The by-election in Rutherglen and Hamilton West, on the outskirts of Glasgow, was called after lawmaker Margaret Ferrier was stripped of her seat in London's parliament for breaking COVID-19 rules. "This is the kind of result that suggests that the Labour Party is potentially capable of winning seats again in Scotland," he told BBC News.

In response to a freedom of information request, the Scottish government on Thursday said an extradition order for the man local officials refer to as Nicholas Rossi had been signed on Sept. 28. The government provided no other information. The suspect has fought a prolonged court battle to prevent his return to the United States since he was arrested in December 2021 at a Glasgow hospital, where he was being treated for COVID-19. Rossi has insisted he is an Irish orphan named Arthur Knight and has never set foot on American soil.
