The number of primary mental injury claims – which cost, on average, more than three times as much as a physical injury claim – surged 92 per cent in four years in Queensland, while the number of secondary claims tripled in a decade.A review of the Queensland workers’ compensation scheme, tabled in parliament on Thursday, warned the government needed to do more to get ahead of a likely blowout in claims.

“The potential is huge, as 9 per cent of people with a self-reported mental health condition believe it was caused by work, but at present the number of claims lodged cover probably less than a 20th of the number of workers this implies,” the review warned.
