New figures reveal Brisbane City Council issued more than $34 million in parking tickets in 2023-24, but also withdrew about $1 million in penalties following objections from drivers.

Brisbane City Council issued 170,677 parking fines worth $34.35 million in 2023-24, up from the 168,042 fines the previous year. The city council urged drivers to follow road rules to avoid being issued a parking fine.

In the 2023-24 financial year, a total of 170,677 parking fines worth $34.35 million were issued to offending drivers — the equivalent of $94,000 a day or about $3,900 every hour. Civic cabinet chair for city standards, Sarah Hutton, pointed out that Brisbane City Council fielded about 40,000 reports of illegal parking in the past financial year.

This was followed by the 25,016 fines given to drivers who stopped contrary to a no-stopping sign, and then the 11,524 fines issued to motorists who stopped on a road with a yellow edge line. The top reason for withdrawn fines was "extenuating circumstances", followed by officer error, reasonable doubt, and "compassionate grounds".If the driver is dissatisfied with the outcome of the internal review, they can request another review through the council's independent disputes commissioner.
