Non-destructive testing can support installation productivity and product quality. This has been implemented in the oil and gas industry as well as the aircraft industry which demands high safety standards.
DOKUMENTASI BATAN Researchers from the Isotope and Radiopharmaceutical Technology Center, National Nuclear Energy Agency JAKARTA, KOMPAS — Non-destructive testing or NDT, which is used to test materials or components of an installation without damaging the objects being tested, requires competent human resources with international standards.
The National Research and Innovation Agency or BRIN is working with the International Atomic Energy Agency to make this happen. This non-destructive testing can support the productivity of the installation and ensure the quality of the product, thus impacting the safety of the installation. NDT can also be used for the evaluation and investigation of a product. NDT methods are divided into nuclear-based and non-nuclear-based. Nuclear-based techniques include radiography using neutron sources, X-rays, and gamma ray-emitting radioisotopes. Nuclear-based methods have been widely used domestically, such as in petrochemical factories and power plants, both in the production process and in installations or refineries.“So, if you compare it, for example with radiographic techniques like in a hospital there is an x-ray when they are examined they don't feel anything. Likewise, non-destructive testing is also carried out in the product industry," said Roziq Himawan, Nuclear Technology Developer Main Expert at the BRIN Radiation Process Technology Research Center at the BJ Habibie Building, BRIN, Jakarta, Monday . The BRIN Radiation Process Technology Research Center in Pasar Jumat, Jakarta has been able to carry out nuclear NDT methods since 2017. Now, they are collaborating with the IAEA to hold a meeting with several countries that are active in the development of NDT in the Asia-Pacific region, with the aim of further improving their human resource competence. This meeting will discuss the programs and activities that will be implemented at the national level by participating member states for the development and implementation of advanced NDT techniques. Many stakeholders in NDT are also participating to obtain input from each interest and harmonize it at the national level. Head of Nuclear Energy Research Organization BRIN Rohadi Awaludin said that the rapid progress of the industry demands stricter requirements for safety and economic impact. Thus, the demand for standardized NDT inspection and advanced technology is increasingly needed.Head of Nuclear Energy Research Organization of BRIN Rohadi Awaludin and all delegates from 17 regional Asia-Pacific countries participated in the"Meeting on Harmonization of National Programs for Development and Application of Advanced NDT Techniques" on August 21-25, 2023 at the BJ Habibie Building, BRIN, Jakarta. Advanced NDT will utilize digital or information technology so that the test results can be viewed visually to facilitate examination of the test results. Advanced NDT is currently being applied in industries, particularly in the oil and gas industry and aircraft industry which demand high safety standards. "The focus of this meeting is the development of advanced level NDT technical human resource capacity, NDT for civil structures, and advanced non-destructive testing on composite materials. It also aims to encourage the improvement of certified human resource capacity in accordance with ISO 9712 in the field of advanced level NDT and civil structure inspection," said Rohadi. The delegates from 17 countries in the Asia-Pacific region who participated were Indonesia, Bangladesh, China, Fiji, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. . In addition, this meeting was also attended by IAEA representatives who are technical officers in the field of NDT.
