One of the Coalition's most senior politicians says the way her government treated former Australia Post boss Christine Holgate was a defining moment for when women turned away from the Liberal-National government.
She joined the Coalition frontbench, taking on the sports portfolio along with regional health and regional communications, when she became deputy leader of the Nationals in 2017.
The auditor-general was scathing of the Coalition's $100 million sports grants program, which it found had a bias towards marginal government seats and electorates that the Coalition was targeting in the 2019 election.Senator McKenzie doesn't resile from her involvement in the program, and remains adamant that her intervention meant more communities benefited from funds.
I'd never experienced the ferocity of the media in that moment. And I don't think I've really seen it at that level since; it was completely overwhelming, I think. And, you know, in that moment, you put your big girl jocks on and your heels and you put your lipstick on and away you go. But it was incredibly isolating and it was very lonely.And was that price worth it to have to know that you resigned on a point of principle, it's probably unavoidable.
