With talks between Britain and the EU showing no signs of a breakthrough, Brexit looks to be heading for extra time
The goal of May's faltering renegotiation was to persuade around 100 Brexiteers in her own party, plus the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party’s 10 MPs, that the U.K. could never be trapped permanently in the backstop — effectively a customs union with the EU.If May’s deal does fall next week, the default option is that the U.K.
— offering reassurance that the EU doesn’t want the backstop to be permanent — into a legally binding document attached to the Withdrawal Agreement. Changes to the nonbinding Political Declaration on the future relationship are also possible. “We don’t want Geoffrey Cox to do his 'Rumpole of the Bailey' act and confuse people into backing it" —, mostly Tory and DUP MPs, including veteran Euroskeptic Bill Cash and DUP Westminster leader Nigel Dodds, will rule on whether any changes secured by Attorney General Geoffrey Cox, who is spearheading the talks, will be enough to sway Brexiteers. According to one MP familiar with the group’s thinking, the changes currently under discussion in Brussels will not cut the mustard.
It is during the extension that May’s control of events is likely to crumble once and for all. “What the hell would be the purpose of the extension? She hasn’t got a plan — we know that,” said the former Cabinet minister. Whatever happens, events will be in the hands of those who can command a majority in the House of Commons for their plan.
