A 'rebel alliance' of British MPs have rushed through a law that will prevent Prime Minister Boris Johnson from taking the U.K. out of the European Union without a trade deal.
: A beleaguered Johnson said during a visit to Ireland on Monday, where he held talks with Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar: “We must get Brexit done because the U.K. must come out on October 31 or else I fear that permanent damage will be done to confidence in our democracy in the U.K.”
Speaker John Bercow announces that he will stand down during an an impassioned speech in the House of Commons, London.: The bill moved through both the Commons and the Lords at breakneck speed after lawmakers moved to enforce it before Parliament is suspended after today for five weeks. Johnson has faced a humiliating week, including a backlash over the sacking of 21 MPs who defied him on Brexit, and the resignations of his brother Jo Johnson from his cabinet and influential minister Amber Rudd.
