Boris Johnson has dismissed documents leaked to the Irish media that hinted that the British government’s Brexit plans include creating custom checks zones along the Irish border
: British prime minister .
On Tuesday, U.K. prime minister Boris Johnson denied that the documents leaked to the Irish broadcaster RTE represented his Brexit plans. “They are not talking about the proposals that we are actually going to be tabling, they are talking about the stuff that went in previously,” Johnson told theIn a separate interview with the BBC, Johnson did not give details of his actual proposals, but said said that customs checks at the Irish border are a “reality” of Brexit.
Naomi Long, leader of Northern Ireland’s centrist Alliance Party, called the plan “unworkable,” while Sinn Fein’s Michelle O’Neill said the plan was “farcical and raises the risk of no deal.” Johnson has just weeks to untangle the Irish backstop—Ireland and the European Union are opposed to the return of a “hard” border with checkpoints and tariffs on the Irish border, while Brexit supporters want the United Kingdom to cut all ties with the trading bloc.
Johnson may have dismissed the proposals as “not quite right,” but they have alarmed business leaders. Seamus Leheny, policy director at Ireland’s Freight Transport Association, told the BBC that it contradicts “every single piece of feedback and advice that we in the Northern Ireland business community have given to the government.”: RTE says that the plans include “customs clearance sites” on both sides of the Irish border with around 20 crossing sites about 10 miles back from the border.
